Valentine's day relationship talk. Seattle, Washington. Wednesday 14th February.
It was a day where most people spend time with their loved ones if they are in a relationship like Shawn's parents who loved each other very much and his mentor and his wife spending time together too, for Shawn however, it was just a normal day for him as there's nothing for him to do, although he rather spend the day wrestling in the gym which essentially is what he did as it was the only thing really apart from British Touring Car racing and trampolining outside when the weather is warmer he does. It got his parents concerned about Shawn when it came to relationships.
They knew he was shy since he was a young boy but knew that talk had to be done today as they called Shawn down from his bedroom as he not long just got in the house from gym training to have a shower while his parents went out for a romantic dinner to celebrate the day. He came downstairs, wondering what they wanted to talk to Shawn about as he sat down and he says this.
Shawn Young: "What's the matter?"
Liam Young (Shawn's dad): "We just need to talk to you."
Shawn Young: "About what?"
Lily Young (Shawn's mum): "Romantic relationships."
For a minute, Shawn nods as he figured what today was, even if he forgot about it because he was more focused on preparing for his upcoming matches in WCG even being invited by Ash Sutton to go to a British Touring Car race this year that he'd been chatting most of today and he says this.
Shawn Young: "Why?"
Liam Young: "Because we don't know if you thought about having somebody special in your life like a girlfriend or even a boyfriend.
Lily Young: "We feel you're missing out on days like this where being in romantic relationships can be very important, especially for the future. Tell us, Shawn, have you ever thought or even loved anybody?"
Shawn Young: "To be honest, no I haven't really thought about romantic relationships. I haven't really had an interest in things like that. I'm just focused on being a wrestler at the moment."
It was true, both parents saw how committed Shawn was to wrestling and wanting to be the top star of the business, that they knew he's an extremely hard worker but while he does have Austen Blackwell as a friend, he doesn't do much else.
Liam Young: "Reason we want to talk to you about it is that we've never seen you bring a girl or a boy home. Well, of course, you brought friends home but not really any sort of connection with them. Have you fancied or got attracted to anybody you seen?"
Shawn Young: "Not at all. The problem with WCG is everyone's taken so I can't really jump into a relationship with anybody there."
Lily Young: "Listen, we wouldn't mind if it's a boy or a girl you bring home but I do feel it's time you make a commitment with someone or at least give it a try. I know wrestling's your life, we understand that, but it doesn't and shouldn't prevent you from falling in love with someone. We want you to be encouraged to fall in love with anybody as we feel you're missing out a lot."
It was very uncomfortable for Shawn to have this discussion with his parents as he truly was embarrassed. He knew at the same time, they were right, Shawn was missing out a lot when it came to being committed with someone.
Shawn Young: "I don't know where to start since everyone in WCG is taken. What else can I do? I don't know if I'm ready for a relationship."
Lily Young: "It's ok to be afraid, I was when I had my first boyfriend at thirteen years old and I was fine in the end once he got to know me and I got to know him. I do think it's about opening up with you. You don't seem to open up to people very much. I do feel your ready, otherwise, we wouldn't have this discussion."
Shawn Young: "As I said, I still don't know where to start. Not my fault that every single wrestler I work with is taken. I barely talk to anybody outside of WCG."
Liam Young: "No, it's not your fault at all, but we're thinking about your future like we don't want you to not discover being in a relationship. You never kissed anybody, you never gave anybody a hug. Is it something you just don't feel you can do or just not had confidence?"
Shawn Young: "Just not had confidence and not really thought about the future other than living on my own. Tell me where I start."
He kept repeating the question because he has no idea how romantic relationships start as he wasn't very good at talking to people since he was a very shy kid, taken from his mum's side of the family genes who had her own mum not being confident on talking to people which is the same problem Shawn faces. His mum says this.
Lily Young: "You can start by opening yourself up a lot more to people. I know you've tried to talk about wrestling and your hobbies online but it wasn't to anybody. You need to start a conversation up with that person and talk what they like and things like music, hobbies, jobs, even sports or anything you know. We wouldn't mind you bringing someone home and have private time with them."
Liam Young: "Take our word for it, we wouldn't come into your room without knocking which we don't anyway and leave you to have time on your own with that special person. I'm shocked you never had a boyfriend or a girlfriend to be honest. You're nineteen years old and not once you thought about falling in love with anybody."
Lily Young: "There's nothing wrong with that at all cos it's apart of being a human being. We'd love for you to explore your feelings to somebody when you find the person that you feel is right for you. We don't expect you to have a romantic relationship with a girl or a boy tomorrow or in the next few months, just something for you to think about. I leave you with your dad to talk about something that's very personal which I can't discuss cos I'm not a man."
Liam goes upstairs as Shawn sighed, even if he was embarrassed with the talk already which seems like it could be a whole lot worse from what they talked about already as Shawn shrugged and went upstairs to find his dad which he sits on the bed.
Liam Young: "Close the door son."
Shawn closes the door behind him as he sits down on the bed, feeling very uncomfortable to have this romantic and leading to sex discussion as he speaks to his son.
Liam Young: "Have you ever played with yourself?"
Shawn Young: "What do you mean?"
Liam Young: "I mean like apart from doing your business, have you taken the time to let's say jackoff at all."
Shawn Young: "Um, I don't think so."
Liam Young: "I thought that and you know, I'm perfectly fine with you doing that in private obviously, not in front of us because us guys tend to do what we have to do sometimes to make us feel good. Maybe you'll learn something about yourself a lot more, only when you want to. I'm not forcing you, I'm just helping you to get yourself out of your comfort zone and open up to someone."
It didn't matter if it was a boy or a girl for their parents as they are clearly open to Shawn even wanting to be in a romantic relationship with another man, they were young enough to understand gay and bisexual relationships as Shawn asks this.
Shawn Young: "Say if I was into men, you and mum wouldn't mind?"
Liam Young: "No, not at all. We'd be happy for you, regardless. You can explore anytime you want in your own time, just we want you to be happy with someone you feel you can be in love with and even more so they'd be very special because nobody forgets the first person they've fallen in love with. I think I'll leave you be as you're embarrassed which is understandable and when you do have sex, always make sure to wear a condom."
Shawn Young: "I haven't forgotten that but good to know."
Liam leaves Shawn alone with a lot to think about, even learning a lot about romantic relationships that there's a lot more to kissing and hugging them. He was glad to have the discussion today as it was perfect on a day that's about romantic relationships and to buy gifts for loved ones and Shawn knew he had to discover a lot about himself before being able to be open and be ready for a relationship.
