Nashville, Tennessee. Friday 23rd June.
The team gathered without me in their hospitality unit, with Denny, Ty, Martin, Christopher, John and Sammy eating dinner. When Brad came in, he looked at the lads and noticed somebody wasn't in the team, which was concerning.
Brad Rogers: "Where's Konrad?"
Martin Truex Jr: "I have no idea, and I haven't seen him myself since I got here. It's concerning because he wasn't here for breakfast, wasn't here for lunch and is now not here for dinner, which isn't like him. Something's up."
John Hunter Nemechek: "Do we even know he's here? Did he have a wrestling show that clashed at all?"
Brad Rogers: "OK, I will get a team member to ask if Konrad is here. Gerald, can you ask a member of the security gate if Konrad's here or not?"
Gerald: "Will do."
Gerald left the hospitality to go towards the security gate. Little did they know I was wrapped up in bed in my trailer with the cuddly bear I brought, crying. He reached the security gate and asked him a question.
Gerald: "Has Konrad come in at all?
Security guard: "Yes, he came here early this morning. He is here."
Gerald: "Thank you."
He saw my name being ticked off the list, which calmed his nerves, and he returned to Brad Rogers's hospitality to report the findings.
Gerald: "Yes, Konrad is here; he came this morning, and his name is ticked off the list."
Brad Rogers: "OK. I hope he's alright because the fact he wasn't here for lunch earlier is a real serious concern."
Ty Gibbs: "Because it's not like him. He was relatively happy at Sonoma."
Denny Hamlin: "Yeah, the guy improved a lot on a road course last time. But we need someone to go to his trailer to check him out."
Martin Truex Jr: "I'm his mentor, and I go to see what's going on."
Brad Rogers: "Bring him here for a team meeting. Force your way in the trailer if Konrad doesn't answer."
Martin nodded as he was given a radio, left the Brad Rogers hospitality, and walked to the trailer area. He showed his pass.
Martin Truex Jr: "Where's Konrad's trailer, please?"
NASCAR drivers trailers only security guard: "It's right over there in the corner."
Martin Truex Jr: "Thank you for your help."
Martin walked in as he searched for my trailer, which he found in no time since he knew what it looked like and knocked on my trailer door and shouted.
Martin Truex Jr: "Konrad, please let me in. Everyone in the team are concerned about you because you didn't show up for lunch and now not dinner."
I didn't answer and didn't want to answer, so I continued to wrap up in bed. Seeing everything, AJ, who just came back from dinner with his team, saw Martin knocking on the trailer door and turned to AJ, my best friend in NASCAR, the guy I see more than Martin himself.
Martin Truex Jr: "Hey, did Konrad seem off to you?"
AJ Allmendinger: "Honestly, I haven't seen him come out of that trailer since I got here."
Martin Truex Jr: "Thank you for letting me know. The team are concerned about him. He didn't come to eat lunch and isn't even eating dinner."
AJ Allmendinger: "That is highly unusual behaviour. We need to talk to him to see what's going on. I got a key to his trailer if it's locked. He gave me one in case he ever locked himself out."
Martin nodded at AJ as he went back in the trailer to find the key to my trailer in case I had locked it and he came back out and walked with Martin to my trailer, and he tried to open it, but it was locked. So AJ put the key in the door and lets himself and Martin in, and they heard a whimper and sniffing, and they looked at each other as Frankie whimpered at AJ and stroked him. AJ then looked at Martin, and they continued to hear the whimper and sniffing again.
AJ Allmendinger: "I've never heard this before, and it's not coming from Frankie. We need to find him ASAP."
Martin and AJ walked through the trailer and saw a person wrapped in the big duvet bed. AJ removed it and saw me wrapped up with a teddy bear in hand and, for the first time, saw me cry, cuddling a teddy bear I brought from the shop I was cuddling to.
AJ Allmendinger: "Konrad?"
Konrad Raab: "Go away."
Martin Truex Jr: "The team are concerned about you, buddy, which is why I'm here. You didn't eat lunch earlier, and now you didn't eat dinner."
Konrad Raab: "What's the point when my life is practically over?"
This raised alarm bells as they had never seen me in this condition before, but I just wanted to be left alone this entire weekend. I only wanted to get in my car and drive, not talk socially to anyone and get on with the job. AJ was looking at Martin, who knew me more than Martin ever did, and he got a chair and sat next to me.
AJ Allmendinger: "You and Luiza had a divorce?"
Konrad Raab: "Yeah, but I fucking did it, AJ, because I couldn't love her anymore. I can't love another person when I can't love myself because she wants to move on from me forever. Now go away. I meet with the team before I drive the car, alright?"
Martin Truex Jr: "Come on, man, you look like shit. You haven't eaten all day, and nobody has seen you."
AJ Allmendinger: "That's not the only thing. I can smell body odour on him, and not pleasant at that."
I didn't want to talk, more now than before, when they didn't seem to care why I was crying and lying in bed in the first place. Even though I had given them a reason and they saw the number of beer cans unopened, of course, I brought in the trailer. Another thing they saw was plenty of boxes of painkillers, and immediately, AJ and Martin looked at each other.
Martin Truex Jr: "Don't think of doing something stupid. We know what you're trying to do with your having unopened beer cans and so many boxes of painkillers. To protect Konrad's mental well-being, AJ, please hide these in your trailer."
AJ Allmendinger: "You can do that because I'm not leaving Konrad on his own. He's extremely vulnerable right now."
Martin Truex Jr: "I suppose I need to report this to the team and get someone to stay with Konrad throughout the night."
AJ gave Martin the keys to AJ's trailer and removed the painkillers boxes I brought, and the unopened cans of beer as AJ wasn't going anywhere; it was clear as day, and AJ was keeping an eye out, knowing that Martin had no idea of me and AJ being closer than best friends. We've had plenty of sexual encounters and kept that away from everyone in NASCAR, including Martin.
AJ Allmendinger: "Please don't do this to yourself. I, Martin and your team care about you."
Konrad Raab: "What else have I got to live for, AJ? It's easy for you to say when you have someone. I have nobody, I'm fucking alone, and I can't cope living in this world anymore. I won't ever find anyone I love and care for since I'm a trash human being. I want to die."
AJ Allmendinger: "No, you truly don't. It's not the answer to your problems. I understand it's hard for you to move on with your life when things are hard right now, but trust me, you'll find someone that will love you. Also, you're not alone. The team, and especially Martin, they care so much about you. Why do you think Martin came here because he and the team didn't give a shit about you? They are worried sick, and the fact you were going to drown beer and painkillers for you to commit suicide is highly concerning, causing a danger to yourself and others."
I knew AJ was right, but I grabbed my duvet and tried to put it on my body again, but AJ removed it. Martin came back and still hadn't seen me get out of bed. He had a question to ask me.
AJ Allmendinger: "When's the last time you ate?"
Konrad Raab: "Four days ago."
AJ Allmendinger: "So let me get you something to eat, and you better eat because you need energy and to take care of yourself. We will go food shopping later to get you food since nobody, as of right now, can trust you being on your own."
AJ texted Martin to get me food from his trailer since AJ was smart enough to know I had nothing to eat. Martin tossed AJ a banana and a vegan-free yoghurt, and when I got up, I had no energy to get up, so I collapsed on the floor, crawling on my hands and knees. AJ picked me up and sat me on the table with a banana and a vegan-free yoghurt. He was sitting there, making sure I would eat. I knew I couldn't get out of not eating, so I did, even if it was something small. He then said this after I finished my yoghurt as I finished my banana at this point. He also got me some water because he knew how vital it was for me to drink. He called me at least four glasses of water which I finished drinking.
AJ Allmendinger: "Good, now give yourself a shower and a scrub down because you aren't smelling nice right now."
I nodded as, finally, maybe I did have people that cared, even if I shut them out in the beginning and even if I was walking around the trailer naked and got in the shower at least to wash myself down, which, luckily, shampoo and shower gel along with a sponge, funnel, toothbrush and toothpaste, antiperspirant and deodorant were already in my trailer. It sounded like while I was in the shower, washing, AJ went into my room and found clothes I took with me in a large suitcase, although he'll find my wrestling clothes in there. I don't know what clothes he'll decide for me, but I still didn't feel better after washing myself and eating small things. I brushed my teeth in the shower before I got out and dried myself. After I was dried, I put antiperspirant and deodorant under my arms. I left the bathroom and saw my Brad Rogers Racing shirt, jeans, boxers and socks folded on the bed. I put them on now, and there were suddenly, people I didn't know were cheering for me, but AJ looked at me.
AJ Allmendinger: "You got people outside to see."
I walked straight to the door and saw it was my team, but my other friends of Kyle Larson, William Byron, Justin Haley and Kyle Busch were there too.
My NASCAR team and friends: "Surprise."
AJ Allmendinger: "See, that's what matters. You're in the NASCAR family; families always have each other's backs. You're not alone."
Martin Truex Jr: "I had nothing to do with it."
For the first time since last week, despite winning a dirt race on Wednesday, I had a genuine smile, knowing I had been reminded that I had friends and a team behind me and supporting me. That I wasn't alone and felt I was a part of something extraordinary. I legitimately cried because I was sad and angry about my divorce because of being unloved and hated myself, and happy because I had a real family around me. Everyone around me hugged me, including the five friends that weren't on my team.
Ty Gibbs: "We love you, buddy."
John Hunter Nemechek: "Yeah, we need you to do your best as an Xfinity Series driver. We want you here on this earth for real. Also, Sammy Smith and I will come to Germany with you to help those who may have lost their lives in the tornados and flooding."
Konrad Raab: "How did you guys know?"
Martin Truex Jr: "Efedder. I read posts from you, and from that person we will not name, even though it was your decision. At least you have someone new to handle your management and racing updates. But I'm also single and sometimes find it difficult, but we can go out and have a blast together. We're a family."
This is the kind of support I'd never get in wrestling, and can you imagine what I'd be like if I wasn't a race car driver? I would've been dead like yesterday, and I made the right call to be surrounded by them because I get along with them better than I could with wrestlers. I called for help, and no wrestler acknowledged what I was going through, nor were they there for me. That's how much I belonged here, although little did AJ and Justin know that I made a friend with Derek Kraus lately after finding out he likes wrestling.
William Byron: "Come to any of us anytime if you need to talk; we'll always have your back, man."
Kyle Busch: "I've always liked you, Konrad; you're a decent dude, and here this, you know, the threat of bombings in Las Vegas? This man outside my brother was the first to call me."
AJ Allmendinger: "Not to mention Konrad hosted my baby shower and gave Tara and me a lot of money and baby gifts for our son."
Sammy Smith: "William and I spent time with Konrad after STARS and CARS races and got to know a guy who's a decent guy, and these wrestlers are complete shitheads to shit on a man like Konrad who has anger issues but can't seem to care about his issues, and it's not fair. He always gets picked on for no reason."
Martin Truex Jr: "You see, Konrad, these wrestlers aren't your friends; I mean, if they can't help you when you asked for it when you cried out for it, they are pieces of shits who don't give a shit about you, and it's fucked up, especially the shit talking they do on social media, literal cowards. We are your family here, and we love your wrestling. We love what you do in the ring and on the track. Make a great contribution to the wrestling and racing community. Now come on, Brad Rogers Racing team, let's go and get Konrad something to eat."
They were all cheering for me to keep up my spirit, and all this was from the team being concerned. Martin must've had a look on efedder after seeing me and stated why I didn't want to come out of the room, although William nodded at Sammy Smith as it was true, I did hang around with them. Kyle Larson, who had yet to say anything, did address this to everyone as I returned to the paddock.
Kyle Larson: "This man beat me in Pro Late Models back in February, and I thought, you bastard, because I had no idea how fast he was and because he was that talented, I invited him to take part in my event I had running days before Bristol dirt race, and he pushed me to my limits. You won't believe the talent that's hiding in Konrad."
Justin Haley: "I challenged Konrad several times because he also kicked my ass using UMP Modifieds. You guys, Konrad, is loved and cared for by everyone in NASCAR, STARS, Cars Tour and Dirt Racing. He's a talented driver and a talented wrestler. Ignore the fuckheads in wrestling; they are fake pieces of shits, they don't care about you, and Griffin admitted that."
Konrad Raab: "Griffin is an asshole anyway. He always has been with the amount of shit he said about my cousin. He's the main reason my cousin hasn't been able to wrestle because of him. All because my cousin said people on Twitter are cowards, and he's right; they are. Especially Griffin and the shit I've seen. Punk bitch. Don't know why he has so many friends. Fuck that cunt."
William Byron: "Your real friends are at this track. Let this guy be with his team, and always hit any of us up if you need to talk. We'll get you through this."
I nodded, and it felt wonderful to be surrounded by nice people who cared about me and gave a damn that wrestlers never did with me. I went with the team to the hospitality, and they sat down with me and stated this.
Brad Rogers: "I'm so sorry about what happened. Things are going to be alright, I promise. Things will be hard, but when you meet someone, she and you be the luckiest people in the world."
Konrad Raab: "I broke things up because I did need to get my head sorted, but I was hurt more when Luiza wanted nothing to do with me. Luckily though, we didn't have kids and had different bank accounts. She practically got nothing from me."
Brad Rogers: "But hearing Martin say you hadn't eaten for four days, you need to eat a lot and drink a lot too. We got food left over for you. We're a family here, alright and after what we've been told, we will get you a sleeping staff for you because we know you can't be alone. John and Sammy will come to Germany with you to deal with the floodings and tornado damage."
Konrad Raab: "Yeah, that means a lot, and I forgot to thank them because I was so overwhelmed, I guess, by the support I got."
Sammy Smith and John Hunter Nemechek came in, and I had that chance.
Konrad Raab: "Thank you for wanting to do this great cause with me."
John Hunter Nemechek: "No problem. We will keep an eye on him, don't worry when he's in Germany."
Brad Rogers: "Let's get everyone else in here and talk racing now. Get yourself some food and eat as much as you want because we want you to be at your best for the racing today."
I nodded, and today, I will treasure all of this and get everyone a gift after what they've done today, being there for me and supporting me when I needed it. The wrestlers, they only proved how much assholes they were to me. They didn't care apart from if it was other people; they were there for them. It showed how unpopular I was and might as well get out of the wrestling business. Only I needed to unload my anger, and that's what I'll use wrestling for now. Not to make friends, fuck them. It was also why I would never date a wrestler or their family members again because it ruined my fucking life.
The team gathered without me in their hospitality unit, with Denny, Ty, Martin, Christopher, John and Sammy eating dinner. When Brad came in, he looked at the lads and noticed somebody wasn't in the team, which was concerning.
